If you're travelling from the Netherlands, Belgium or further afield with your dog, Lake Ammersee is one of the more welcoming corners of Germany. The village of Herrsching — on the eastern shore, 45 minutes by train from Munich — has designated dog beaches, kilometres of forest trails, and a handful of guesthouses (ours included) that genuinely like having dogs as guests. Here is what you need to know before you load the car.

Why Lake Ammersee works for dog travel
Three things make this specific lake easier than many others in Germany:
-
Multiple dog beaches are clearly signposted. Most German lakes either ban dogs outright or create a patchwork of unwritten rules. Around Lake Ammersee there are at least four official dog-friendly bathing areas — and plenty of quiet shoreline segments where a well-behaved off-leash dog is tolerated.
-
The forest hiking network is enormous. The Kiental forest starts right at the edge of Herrsching. You can walk for three hours without repeating a trail. Cool shade, soft forest floor, streams for drinking. Most routes are paw-friendly (no gravel torture).
-
Culture is relaxed about dogs indoors. Many Bavarian beer gardens and traditional restaurants welcome dogs on a lead. The famous Andechs Monastery beer garden is a classic example: well-behaved dogs at the table are normal, not tolerated-with-a-frown.
Dog beaches around Lake Ammersee
Herrsching dog beach
At the southern end of the Herrsching public beach, there is a clearly marked dog-friendly section. Ten-minute walk from our guesthouse. Flat shore, grass to roll on, shallow water entry that is safe for puppies and older dogs.
Utting dog beach
Three kilometres north by foot along the promenade, or accessible by bike. Larger, quieter on weekdays. Grass, a few picnic tables, gentle water.
Schondorf dog bay
On the same (east) side of the lake, farther north. A small sandy cove with clear water. Less signage, but locals confirm dogs are welcome.
Dießen dog section
On the opposite (west) shore, reachable by lake steamer from Herrsching (30 minutes one way). The steamer accepts dogs on a lead.
Hiking with your dog
Easy: Kiental forest loop (5 km)
Start at the Herrsching forest edge, walk 2.5 km up a gentle slope through beech trees, a small stream alongside, and circle back. Plenty of shade even in August. Paws stay cool on the forest floor. Drinking water needed — there's a fountain at the trailhead.
Medium: Andechs Monastery round trip (10 km)
From Herrsching up through Kiental to Andechs Monastery (allow 1.5 hours), long rest in the beer garden (they welcome dogs), return via the old pilgrim path. Dogs must be on lead through the monastery grounds. Food and water bowls at the beer garden entrance.
Harder: Pähler Schlucht gorge (loop 6 km)
A 20-minute drive south. Wooden walkways through a forest gorge with a small waterfall. Dogs on a lead only (steep drop-offs), but dogs love the stream. Excellent for hot days — the gorge stays 3 – 5 °C cooler than the surrounding area.
Long: Ammersee round (50 km)
For fit dogs and their athletic humans. Following the lake's perimeter trail. Allow two days; overnight in Dießen or Utting. Several drinking-water stops for dogs along the path.
Rules and etiquette
Leash law: Bavaria has a general leash rule (Leinenpflicht) in public places, with local exceptions. On the Herrsching waterfront promenade a lead is expected. On the dog beaches, off-lead is fine. In the forest, off-lead is tolerated if the dog is reliable and stays near you.
Waste: Bag-your-own is law. Free bag dispensers are placed at strategic points along the waterfront.
Noise: Bavarians are patient with friendly dogs, intolerant of barking in apartments after 22:00. If your dog is a barker, a ground-floor apartment or room with direct garden access (like our Ferienwohnung Herrsching) is wiser than an upper floor.
Travelling with your dog by train
Deutsche Bahn rules, as of 2026:
- Small dogs in a carrier (no larger than hand luggage) travel free
- Large dogs require a child ticket (50 % of adult fare) and must be leashed and muzzled on platforms and trains
- Water bowls in stations are uncommon — carry your own
- The S-Bahn from Munich Airport to Herrsching is one direct line (S8). Dogs travel on the floor near your feet.
From the Netherlands, the ICE Amsterdam → Frankfurt → Munich accepts dogs under the same rules. Book in advance: the ICE quiet car is better avoided with a dog.
Staying at the Sonnenhof with your dog
We are a dog-friendly family guesthouse that has accepted four-legged guests for decades. Practical details:
- 10 € per night per dog. Covers additional cleaning.
- Enclosed garden at the Sonnenhof — useful for a quick morning toilet break without the lead.
- Ground-floor options in several apartments — useful if your dog avoids stairs.
- Towels for muddy paws — we keep a pile of "dog towels" at the entrance, please use them freely.
- Water bowls available on request — just ask at check-in.
- No pet-free zones inside. We don't treat dogs like they are a problem. If they are polite, so are we.
We have five holiday apartments that range from 27 to 55 square metres — all with kitchens, plenty of room for a dog bed. The Ferienwohnung Herrsching has direct access to the garden. The Ferienwohnung Utting has a corner that many previous guests have used for a dog crate.
Useful phrases in German (for dog owners)
- "Ist mein Hund hier willkommen?" — Is my dog welcome here?
- "Darf mein Hund ohne Leine laufen?" — Is off-leash OK?
- "Wo ist der nächste Hundestrand?" — Where's the nearest dog beach?
- "Mein Hund ist ruhig und angeleint." — My dog is calm and on a leash.
- "Wasser bitte — auch für den Hund?" — Water, please — and for the dog too?
Most people under 50 speak some English, but a little German goes a long way with older innkeepers and shopkeepers.
