Munich hotels charge 180 – 300 € per night in summer, more during Oktoberfest and international fairs. Our guest rooms in Herrsching start at 75 €, and the city centre is 45 minutes away by train. For many visitors — football fans, Oktoberfest travellers, business-fair attendees and museum-bound families — this maths is the reason to book a room here instead of there.
45 min to Munich Hbf

~1h to Theresienwiese
~1h 10min door-to-door

Why stay in Herrsching instead of Munich?
The obvious answer: money. A mid-range Munich hotel in June – September runs 180 € per night. Our guest room is 75 €. That is 100 € saved per night, times a week — 700 € in your pocket for restaurants, tickets and the airport shuttle.
The less-obvious answer: the evenings. After a day in Munich — Marienplatz, the Viktualienmarkt, a museum, a U-Bahn change, perhaps a football match — most visitors want to decompress. Munich centre doesn't let you decompress; Herrsching does. You step off the S-Bahn, walk five minutes to the lake, order a dinner, and breathe. The quality of a holiday is often decided by the evenings.
The third answer, for families: the kids sleep better. A Herrsching guesthouse room is quieter than a central Munich hotel. Rooftop sirens, Wi-Fi-disturbed tourists, breakfast crowds — all that goes away.
The S-Bahn S8: your day-trip tool
The S8 is one of the most useful commuter lines in Bavaria. It runs from Herrsching directly to Munich Hauptbahnhof and on to the airport, without transfer. Practical facts:
- Frequency: every 20 minutes, from about 5:00 am to midnight
- Herrsching → Munich Hauptbahnhof: exactly 45 minutes
- Herrsching → Munich Airport: exactly 1 hour 15 minutes
- Day ticket family (2 adults + children up to 14): around 15 € — unlimited travel all day on MVV (bus, S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram)
- Single ticket adult: around 10 € to central Munich
Buy tickets at the station vending machine or on the MVV app (available in English). Validate the single tickets before you board (punch at the blue machine on the platform). Day tickets are pre-validated by the printed date.
Day trip #1: Football at Allianz Arena
The Allianz Arena is 20 minutes north of Munich city centre and reachable from Herrsching in about 1 hour 15 minutes:
- S-Bahn S8 from Herrsching → Munich Hauptbahnhof (45 min)
- Change to U-Bahn U6 (direction Garching)
- Get off at Fröttmaning — the station is directly at the stadium
On home match days, expect a carnival atmosphere along the pedestrian bridge from the U-Bahn. Red flags for Bayern München, blue for Löwen 1860 if it's a second-team match. The MVV day ticket we mentioned earlier (15 € family) covers everything including the return trip.
Where to book tickets: fcbayern.com/en for Bayern home games. TSV 1860 München for the second-division matches (much cheaper tickets, still a full stadium atmosphere for traditionalists).
Return trips after evening matches: the S-Bahn S8 runs until just past midnight. The last train from Munich Hauptbahnhof back to Herrsching is usually at 12:35 am.
Day trip #2: Oktoberfest without the accommodation panic
Oktoberfest (late September to the first Sunday in October) turns Munich accommodation into a feeding frenzy. Even mid-range hotels double or triple their rates. Many visitors discover our Herrsching guesthouse a month into their planning and book with relief — we don't surcharge Oktoberfest.
Getting to Theresienwiese from Herrsching:
- S-Bahn S8 Herrsching → Munich Hauptbahnhof (45 min)
- Walk 10 minutes south (or U4/U5 one stop to Theresienwiese)
Practical Oktoberfest tips for Herrsching-based visitors:
- Eat a solid breakfast at the guesthouse before you leave — food inside the beer tents is good but slow
- Start early: Oktoberfest tents are most relaxed 11 am – 3 pm, much busier after 4 pm
- Buy beer-tent reservations in advance for weekends — walk-ins are possible Monday to Thursday lunch hours
- Return timing: the last S-Bahn S8 from Munich Hbf is around 12:35 am. Plan to leave Theresienwiese by 11:30 pm to make it comfortably
Day trip #3: Museums for rainy days
Two museums justify the trip even if you've only planned a week:
Deutsches Museum — the world's largest science and technology museum. Children's section ("Kinderreich") for ages 3 – 8 with hands-on machines. Teenagers love the mining tunnel simulation. Adults love the historic aircraft hall. Allow at least 3 hours; a full day is not excessive. Entry about 15 € for adults, kids under 6 free.
Bayerische Nationalmuseum — for visitors who appreciate medieval art, Bavarian history, and less famous but quieter galleries. One of those museums where you bump into locals rather than coach tours. Entry about 8 €.
Both are central, reachable by U-Bahn from Munich Hauptbahnhof in 10 minutes.
Day trip #4: Old town & Viktualienmarkt
The classic first-day-in-Munich walk:
- S-Bahn S8 to Munich Hauptbahnhof
- Walk east 10 minutes to Marienplatz (the main square)
- See the Glockenspiel at 11:00, 12:00 or 17:00
- Walk south 5 minutes to the Viktualienmarkt — Munich's outdoor food market
- Eat a Weißwurst with sweet mustard and pretzel for lunch
- Optionally: Hofbräuhaus for a beer (10 minutes north) or the Englischer Garten (20 minutes further north)
This is a full day even at a relaxed pace. Most visitors return to Herrsching by late afternoon ready for a quiet lake walk.
Day trip #5: Airport transfers
If your flight is early morning, stay the night before at the Sonnenhof. The first S-Bahn S8 leaves Herrsching at 4:40 am and arrives at Munich Airport at 5:55 am. Check in for most international flights opens around 6:00 – 6:30 am.
Late-evening arrivals: the S-Bahn runs from the airport until just past midnight. Our guesthouse check-in handles late arrivals on request — just let us know in the enquiry.
What you save by staying in Herrsching
A rough comparison for a family of four in peak summer:
| Munich 4-star hotel | Herrsching (Sonnenhof) | |
|---|---|---|
| 7 nights | ~1 800 € | ~600 € (apartment) |
| Breakfasts out | included | ~70 € in our kitchen |
| Parking | 35 €/night | free |
| Peace in the evening | 3/5 | 5/5 |
| S-Bahn day tickets × 3 days | — | ~45 € |
| Total week | ~2 100 € + tax | ~715 € + tax |
Over 1 300 € saved, for a week with 3 days in Munich and 4 days at the lake. That pays for dinners, museum tickets, steamer fares and an extra day in the Alps.
