Herrsching on Lake Ammersee: A Visitor's Guide for International Travellers

Visitor Guide·7 min read

Herrsching sits on the eastern shore of Lake Ammersee, 35 kilometres west of Munich. It is the kind of Bavarian lakeside village that Germans know about and international visitors are just starting to discover. If you're planning a week in the area — from Amsterdam, Utrecht, Zurich, Vienna or further — this guide walks through the practical things: how to get here, what the weather is like, and why many Dutch and British guests choose Herrsching over the tourist-heavy areas closer to Munich.

Why Herrsching and not central Munich?

Three practical reasons guests from abroad tell us they prefer Herrsching as their base:

1. Prices are half of central Munich. A guest room in central Munich in summer runs 180 – 250 € per night. A room in our family guesthouse in Herrsching starts at 75 €. For a week with a family of four, the difference pays for dinners, museum tickets and the S-Bahn fares several times over.

2. Munich is still one train ride away. The S-Bahn S8 connects Herrsching directly to Munich's main station in 45 minutes. A family ticket costs around 15 € per day for all four of you. You get a Bavarian lakeside home base AND easy day-access to the city — museums, Allianz Arena football matches, Oktoberfest in late September.

3. You wake up in nature, not traffic. Lake Ammersee is clean, flat on the shore, surrounded by forest and farmland. A 5-minute walk from our guesthouse takes you to the public beach. Another 10 minutes brings you to the forest trail up to Andechs Monastery — a 13th-century Benedictine abbey famous for its beer garden.

How to get to Herrsching

From the Netherlands

The easiest route is by train. Amsterdam → Frankfurt → Munich Hauptbahnhof (total 7 hours with one change), then S-Bahn S8 to Herrsching (45 min). Total travel time: about 8 hours door-to-door. The ICE trains have power outlets, decent Wi-Fi and room for bikes and large luggage.

By car the drive is around 800 km via the A3 / A9 — roughly 8 hours without heavy traffic. Toll charges apply only on Austrian roads if you detour via Innsbruck, which you usually don't need to.

From the UK

Fly into Munich (MUC). From Munich Airport the direct S-Bahn S8 brings you to Herrsching in 1 hour 15 minutes — no transfers needed if the S8 is running on the direct loop. At the time of writing, that single S-Bahn line connects the airport and our village.

From Switzerland and Austria

Drive via the A96 (Lindau → Munich) or the A95 (Garmisch → Munich). Both are around 2 – 3 hours. Parking at our guesthouse is free, directly at the property.

The village in one paragraph

Herrsching has about 10,000 residents, a Romanesque church, three small supermarkets (Edeka, Aldi, Rewe), a bakery that opens at 6 am, four or five restaurants along the lakefront, a weekly farmers' market on Saturday mornings and a lake steamer dock with boats running every 30 – 60 minutes in summer. In short: it's a walkable village with everything you need for a relaxed week, without being touristy like nearby Starnberg.

Top things to do as a first-time visitor

1. Walk up to Andechs Monastery

A 5-kilometre walk through the Kiental forest brings you to the Andechs Monastery on a hill overlooking the lake. The monks have been brewing beer there since 1455, and their beer garden is legendary — generous pours, honest Bavarian food, families welcome, dogs welcome. Allow 1.5 hours uphill, 1 hour down. For the return you can also take a local bus.

2. Take the lake steamer to Dießen

Herrsching and Dießen sit on opposite shores of Lake Ammersee. Historic paddle steamers connect the two in 30 minutes. Return tickets are around 10 €. In Dießen, visit the Marienmünster cathedral and the Carl-Orff-Museum (the composer lived here). Children especially enjoy the playground right next to the steamer dock.

3. Swim from the Herrsching public beach

A 10-minute walk from our guesthouse brings you to the public beach. Entry is free, the water is flat and safe for children. Summer temperatures reach 22 – 24 °C in July and August. There is a small kiosk and plenty of shaded grass for picnics.

4. Bike around the lake

A 50-kilometre paved bike trail loops around Lake Ammersee. Rental bikes are available at the train station (about 15 € per day). If 50 km feels too long, do the short Herrsching → Utting → Schondorf section (20 km total) and take the steamer back.

5. Day trip to Munich

On one day of your trip take the S-Bahn into Munich. Highlights: the old town (Marienplatz), Viktualienmarkt food stalls, the Deutsches Museum (world's largest science museum), and if there's a home game — the Allianz Arena. See our separate guide on visiting Munich from Herrsching.

What to pack

Even in summer, evenings on the lake get cool. A light jacket or long-sleeve layer is smart. Rain is possible any month; a packable rain jacket saves a day. Sturdy walking shoes for the Andechs hike, swimming gear, sun cream (the reflection off the lake is strong). A dog lead if you're bringing your dog — there is an official leash requirement in most public spaces, but the lake allows dogs freely at several designated beaches.

Where to stay

Herrsching has a handful of small guesthouses, a few mid-range hotels and several vacation rentals. The Sonnenhof is a family-run place in its third generation — 5 holiday apartments (with kitchens, for families and longer stays) and 7 guest rooms (more like classic bed-and-breakfast, good for shorter trips). We are 50 metres from the lake and a 10-minute walk from the S-Bahn station. Dogs are welcome for 10 € per night.

Prices in 2026: guest rooms from 75 € per night, apartments from 90 €. No cleaning surcharge on apartment stays. Breakfast can be added on request for a small extra charge.
